John P. Vella has over fifteen years of experience in litigating complex cases. Mr. Vella began his career in private practice before devoting ten years to serving the People of The State of Michigan. As an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Washtenaw County, Mr. Vella successfully prosecuted well over a thousand felony cases. Mr. Vella was delegated to special victim cases where he handled hundreds of criminal sexual conduct cases, capital cases and dozens of the most complex murder cases. Mr. Vella’s vast trial experience includes lengthy trials with an extensive amount of witnesses, mass amounts of exhibits, and many specialized expert witnesses. Utilizing his litigation expertise and strategic trial planning, he was successful in proving first-degree murder at every murder trial he prosecuted.
Mr. Vella has a unique perspective on family law from handling sexual assault cases, child abuse cases, and domestic assault cases including domestic homicide cases. Mr. Vella’s profound experience with crime victims of all ages and unique situations has given him a passion for helping others. Counseling individuals through the most devastating events of their lives has led to Mr. Vella’s motivation to want to assist families through complicated family law cases. A combination of successfully arguing the intricacies of the law and pride in his work has earned Mr. Vella respect in the legal community.
Mr. Vella has lived in Oakland County for most of his life. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University in 2002 and his Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2005. Mr. Vella successfully completed the Michigan State Bar in 2005 and is currently a member of the aviation law section, criminal law section, family law section, and litigation section.
Mr. Vella is a full-time father and lives with his son and their dog in South Lyon, MI. In his free time, he enjoys coaching youth ice hockey, playing in an adult ice hockey league, and adventurous outdoor activities with his son.
